The EMPA Speaker Series offers Wagner students the opportunity to participate in active discussions of management issues, led by students from Wagner's Executive MPA program. EMPA students will lead small discussions based on their professional experiences in the fields of education and international development. This is a unique opportunity to engage with EMPA students and to learn from their exemplary careers. The event will also include wine and appetizers.

Stacey Gillett, Deputy Chief of Innovation, NYC Department of Education
Stacey Gillett is the Deputy Chief of Innovation for Program Management and Operations at the NYC Department of Education where she oversees a staff of fifty-five, and education reforms in the Innovation Zone, a community of 165 schools committed to better personalizing learning. Previously, she served as Chief of Staff, establishing the Office of Innovation and growing its staff 600% in one year. Prior to this, she worked for Mayor Bloomberg’s NYC Center for Economic Opportunity where she led the effort to nationally replicate the Center’s anti-poverty programs in partnership with the Obama Administration. Previously she worked as a legislative aide for Senator Charles Schumer and for the House Committee on Government Reform, led by Representative Henry Waxman. Stacey graduated from Barnard College.
Diego Merino, Director of Recruitment, Harlem Village Academies
Diego Merino is Director of Recruitment at Harlem Village Academies (HVA), where he leads efforts to recruit an exceptional and diverse teaching faculty. Before joining HVA in 2011, Diego served as a grantmaking Program Officer at American Jewish World Service, an international human rights organization, was a Dean of Students at Harlem Village Academies, and taught seventh grade as a member of Teach For America in Chicago. He has directed multiple service learning programs for young people to developing countries, helping students engage with global development issues. A lifelong traveler, he has lived and worked in Latin America, Asia and Europe. He is fluent in Spanish and proficient in French and Indonesian. Diego holds bachelor’s degrees in religious studies and music from Indiana University.

Join WMLO and the NY Metro chapter of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) for a career panel featuring local professionals followed by an ASPA board meeting and networking event. The career panel will feature ASPA members' diverse professions in NY and the role their ASPA membership has played. The panel will be followed by the monthly ASPA board meeting and networking with local members. This is a unique opportunity to learn more about ASPA and engage with accomplished professionals. There is an ASPA WMLO "Happy Hour" after the event at Puck Fair (across the street)!

The American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) is a national professional organization dedicated to better government and excellence in the public service. Established in 1939, ASPA is the largest and most prominent professional association in the field of public administration with a diverse membership of more than 10,000 practitioners, academicians and students.
The New York Metropolitan Chapter of ASPA, comprised of more than 800 members and supporters, offers a number of opportunities for professional development in the field of public administration. The Chapter’s speakers’ series and conferences are just some of the ways New York Metro ASPA members learn, develop and network with other public service professionals at the local level. The Chapter also sponsors public service scholarships and awards, student essay contests, and an annual awards dinner meeting. New York Metro ASPA publishes a newsletter informing members on what’s new in the local public administration community and reports on the achievements of the Chapter’s governing board.
Wagner Day of Service – WMLO Student Learning Support with GO Project! - Saturday April 6, 2013
Time: 9:00am-2:00pm
Location: Manhattan (Grace Church School at 86 Fourth Avenue and LREI at 272 6th Avenue)
The GO Project provides year-round educational and family support services to children who are performing below grade level and equips them with the confidence and skills needed to succeed. 2-3 Volunteers are placed in a class led by a Head Teacher. The Head Teacher models a lesson or activity then the volunteers work in small groups or one-to-one with students to help them complete the assignment. Volunteers help supervise the students and have fun with them during the recess period.

This event includes two interactive workshops and a panel discussion with a focus on women's leadership and strengthening professional skills. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in two workshops: negotiation and risk-taking led by Fiona Greig (Deputy Budget Director for the City of Philadelphia and McKinsey & Co), and utilizing personal strengths for leadership led by Bethany Godsoe (Executive Director of NYU Wagner's Research Center for Leadership in Action). To close the event, participants will hear from several accomplished women leaders in public service during the panel discussion and short networking reception.

This event provided an opportunity to explore your research interests and discuss the latest management- and philanthropy-related research being conducted across specializations by your distinguished Wagner faculty and to learn about the impact they envision their research having on public service. Students from across all Wagner specializations were invited to attend this event, and the research discussion topics took into account a variety of perspectives. Dinner and drinks, including wine, were served.
