Gara is a Senior Fellow at NYU Wagner and will answer your questions about his extensive professional background and share career insights. From 2007 to 2011, Gara was President and CEO of The Atlantic Philanthropies, an international grantmaking foundation dedicated to bringing about lasting changes in the lives of disadvantaged and vulnerable people. Before joining Atlantic, Gara served as Vice President and Director of U.S. Programs for the Open Society Institute, a foundation established by philanthropist George Soros.

Kwaku is a Program Officer for Early Childhood and Youth Programming at the Robin Hood Foundation offered career insights and advice. Robin Hood finds, funds and partners with programs that have proven they are an effective remedy to poverty in NYC. In 2011 alone, Robin Hood granted more than $146 million to fight poverty in NYC.
“We Don’t Need the Boss, but the Boss Needs Us”: Management Strategies in Organizations with Democratic Decision-Making Structures

In a time of financial uncertainty, weakened organized labor, and citizens taking to the streets to Occupy Wall Street and beyond, workers and managers alike are rethinking the roles organizations play in our economy and society, as well as their own places within these organizations. For some the answer lies in blurring the lines between front-line workers, clients and bosses, creating “solidarity economies” where the management and health of an organization is shared between all involved. But what does this entail, and how do leaders in these organizations provide direction?
Students joined facilitators from SolidarityNYC in a World Style Café discussion of management strategies in organizations that emphasize workplace cooperation and shared decision-making
Learning objectives of this event were:
- To investigate management strategies in organizations with democratic decision-making structures, such as cooperatives, credit unions, and community supported agriculture
- To encourage future leaders to think of how decisions impact their workers and how these workers can be incorporated into the decision-making process
Philanthropy & Fundraising Networking Reception - Co-Sponsored by WMLO

Workshop: Dos and Don'ts of Salary Negotiation - Co-Sponsored by WMLO

Students joined in this interactive session where OCS Staff to review tried-and-true principles and strategies for negotiating salaries and job offers. It addressed the students who are nervous about negotiating their salary. Or feel asking for what they want will negatively impact your job search.

Before registration opened for Fall 2012, WMLO & Bridge board members, who are in their second year, from Management, Social entrepreneurship, Policy and International specializations, provided academic advice and guidance to first year Wagner students. The peer advisers addressed student's queries regarding course registration, suitable classes, enrollment process to Stern classes and other schools and other academic concerns. This event was to help students to decide on pursuing courses that best suit their career interest and develop their management skills.
Workforce Development NYC

WMLO organized this event to provide students with a platform to discuss and get an exposure to labor issues in the context of management, addressing the challenges for managers, the gaps that require the most attention, and solutions to solving those labor issues.
Learning objectives of this event were:
- To provide future managers with perspective about the challenges and obstacles faced by NYC’s diverse workforce.
- To create a space for students, workers, and individuals in the workforce development field to exchange ideas.
- To investigate past and current workforce development trends and explore potential avenues for future directions.

WMLO Team Volunteer Day at Computers For Youth

WMLO team Volunteer Day was scheduled on March 24, where WMLO team members and students volunteered for Computers For Youth, an organization helping students in low income communities to harness the power of digital learning to improve education outcomes. Addressing Diversity in the Workplace: An Interactive Workshop

Students across all specializations at Wagner attended this workshop that provided answers to "How Well Do We Manage Diversity"?
WMLO, in partnership with ALAS, SPA, WISS and WWC, hosted an interactive workshop to address and understand how to manage the different dimensions of race,culture, ethnicity, physical abilities, age, gender, sexual orientation, and other characteristics that give rise to a variety of perspectives, affecting performance, motivation, success, and interactions with others in the workplace.
The learning objectives for the workshop were:
- To increase knowledge about diversity in the workplace
- To encourage self-awareness about cultural and social identities and our individual biases, attitudes, and behaviors
- To develop skills to effectively address diversity in the workplace
Facilitator Bio: David P. Rivera
David P. Rivera, M.S. is a doctoral candidate in counseling psychology at Teachers College, Columbia University. He holds degrees in psychology and counseling from Johns Hopkins University and the University of Wyoming. His research focuses on issues impacting the marginalization and health of people of color and sexual minorities. David’s research has been published in The Counseling Psychologist, Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology, and The Journal of Counseling and Development. His work also includes publications on workplace diversity issues. He has received multiple recognitions for his work, including national honors from the American Psychological Association and the American College Counseling Association.

The International Project Planning Panel, organized by The International Public Service Association (IPSA) and Wagner Management and Leadership Organization (WMLO), was attended by students across different specializations. The panel was an interactive event that allowed students to engage with successful practitioners and professors who have significant experience in project planning and management in an international setting. This was a great opportunity to discuss current trends in international project planning with experts from a range of different organizations.
